Create Your Own Clothing Style
High School classes don't teach you how to sew, much less create your own clothing style. So you've been relegated to buying stuff from mall stores to create your look. How unique can that be? For true uniqueness, take a look at the latest magazines, figure out what you like, then head to the sewing store to look at similar patterns.
learn to sew,
buy fabric that talks to you, and voila, you're unique. Creating is so much more fun than consuming by buying expensive, poorly made garments that you'll see on someone else. And, once you've made something for yourself that you're proud of, you're not likely to throw or give it away! Can't afford to buy nice fabric? Then go to the thrift stores and garage sales. Pick up garments that speak to you. Learn to recycle old into new. Remake the garment - add trims, cut off the sleeves, add a second tier. By the time you're satisfied, you've created your own clothing style. Watch the DIY channels. There are great sewing and creative how-to shows that will inspire you. You can make anything they make, only better - because you have more than half-an-hour to create something!
Like Picasso
I recently went to an art museum with a special Picasso drawing exhibit and tour. I learned that Picasso spent much of his time interpreting other artists: whether a postcard or a 17th century portrait, Picasso would draw the same object, over and over, in different ways and using many different techniques. His definition of creativity was totally his own, but it was inspired by other people, objects and his unique point of view. So why not make a habit of people watching? Go to a new place, and sit and watch the action - what are people wearing, what colors and prints are flashing by? Take a small paper pad and jot down ideas.
Creativity of your own
Want to be creative? Fill your life with nature and see the art around you. Interpret what you see in magazines, on the web, and in your travels. The sewing patterns, fabric stores, fashion magazines and department stores have given you a thread of an idea – it is up to you to make that idea your own.
Learn about the basics of fabrics to choose,
depending upon what you want to make.
Then try some simple projects.
You will be successful, and you will help build skills so that you can begin to create your own clothing style. Not mall style.
