Holiday Sewing Projects
Here you'll find some quick and easy holiday sewing projects for gift giving, decorating, and wearing. I promise - no decorated Christmas theme vests or t-shirts. They should have been outlawed long ago!
Fabric Bowls

This holiday sewing project - fabric bowls can be made from an unlimited choice of pretty cotton fabrics. They are prettier than your average serving dish, and like glass dishes they can be washed. They are so easy to make that youll be making them for every holiday season. The pictures here show a Thanksgiving theme (thats because its my favorite holiday!) But for those of you who prefer Christmas chose red and green, or metallic fabric. They are quick to make all you need is 2 squares of fabric, stiff fusible interfacing and a contrasting spool of thread for all the satin stitching. Instructions: 1. Cut 2 fabric squares the size of the bowl you want: Small size 9-1/2 squares; Medium 11-1/2 squares; Large 13-1/2 squares.
2. Cut 1 same size square of fusible stiff interfacing (you can substitute any type of regular stiff interfacing, and use spray adhesive to attach it).
3. Make an inner square of different fabric or use the same fabric and mark it. Small bowl: 3 inner square; Medium bowl: 3-5/8 inner square; Large bowl: 4-3/4 inner square.
4. Mark placement of darts at each corner of the fabric squares. Measure across the corners at the edge, and using a pencil or other marker, make a dot evenly spaced on each side, according to the measurements below. Small 2 wide at edge; Medium 1-3/4 wide at edge; Large 1 -1/2 wide at edge.
5. Draw lines from each dot to corner of inner square, thus creating a dart. (Note: the medium bowl in the picture had the darts centered on the sides, instead of the corners. Easy enough to do!)
6. Fuse 1 side of interfacing to wrong side of outside bowl.
7. Pin 2nd layer of fabric to the interfaced square. Match inner corners of inner square exactly, and hand baste around stitching lines of inner square. You can see the basting in this picture.
8. Set your machine to a zigzag stitch that is somewhat wide, and very very close together. (Satin stitch on some machines is 4mm wide and .5mm long). Satin stitch inner square, pivoting at corners. 9. Satin stitch inner square again, using a slightly wider zig zag stitch (i.e. 5mm). This makes your satin stitches more dense.
10. Using a machine straight stitch, stitch around outer edges of bowl, close to the edge, pivoting at the darts. The idea is to stitch a scant (1/16) line around the darts, outside the cutting lines, as illustrated in this picture.
11. Cut darts on cutting lines, being careful not to cut through satin stitch of inner square.
12. Butt edges of 2 dart sides together, and carefully satin stitch (about 4mm) from outer corner of bowl to inner corner of bowl, catching both sides of dart.
13. On outside, satin stitch (about 5mm) darts again to catch and cover edges completely. This makes your bowl more secure, and completely washable. Also hides any oopsies the first go around.
14. Satin stitch (about 4mm) upper edges of bowl. Then satin stitch (5mm) one last time.
And it's ready to use!
