overskirt for prom dress

by Lurene

I came here for help! A friend has asked me to make prom dresses for her granddaughters. One is a basic short, strapless dress (no problem here) with a train-like, cape-like overskirt with a strap over one shoulder, made of lace. I've searched the web, pattern books, etc. with no success as to how to make this. Any suggestions are worth a million. Thanks, Lurene in Oklahoma.

Beautiful!

Hi - What a beautiful dress! I think an overdress would really add something special.

You can look for a pattern (try online, I've added links below), but I think you could also adapt an a-line skirt pattern that has a button front. You would probably not have to add too much (maybe 1/2") to accommodate for the bulk of the dress underneath. The scallops are a little harder, but if you look in the quilt department at your local fabric store, they might have a scallop form you could trace. Or use a plastic lid to trace the scallops onto your fabric.

The top, I think can just be a simple draped piece of fabric that attaches separately onto the overskirt.

If the a-line skirt is too full, you might want to consider using a knit fabric, which would make the skirt drape nicely.
